Hill Country Chapter
Kerrville, Texas
Butch Mize, Chapter Advisor
(830) 866-3396
The Hill Country Chapter (HCC) held their June DOG on the 11th.  We had guests from the Fredericksburg area that showed a lot of interest and excitement in our Society.  They are long-time DO cookers and will be joining our organization.  The dinner bell brought out the pots with rolls, stuffed bell peppers, cheesy chicken supreme, corn casserole, banana bread, and lemon cake.  After dinner, we had a short meeting; Butch Mize was nominated for the HCC Advisor position.  Betty Bennett seconded the motion.  A voice vote was taken and Mr. Butch Mize is now the new HCC Advisor.  All LSDOS signs, banners, and property belonging to the HCC were transferred to him.  Congratulations, Butch!

Rose and I plan to remain active within HCC and look forward to cooking with all our friends.  We will also be forming a new chapter called the “Traveling Dutch Oven Cookers”.  Our first meeting will be on June 17-19, 2005 in San Angelo.  For more information, call Rose or Rich at (830) 896-4059.

At this time, Butch is without a computer due to lightening storm.  He can be reached by snail mail at:  PO Box 298, Mountain Home, Texas 78058.

As HCC Advisors during these past three years, we have enjoyed many, many, MANY ‘fun, food, and fellowship’ with you all.  Thank you.

We now look forward to Butch and Beth’s Advisorship to take us to a new pinnacle.

Until then, take care and keep ‘em fire burning!

Hi, folks!

Due to some conflicting scheduled events, we are revising our Fall Hill Country Chapter DOG schedule and updating some upcoming events.  Rose and I have been busy all summer cooking up a storm at various locations and generated a lot of interest in the Dutch oven.  I believe we also signed up two new members.  We have lots of new recipes we have tried.  One of our favorite is sweet & sour red cabbage.  We will cook this as one of the dishes at the National DOG next month.

The National DOG is scheduled for September 10-12 at the Yellow Rose Arena in Madisonville.  We have room for around 200 cooks at a shelter and 85 full hookup RV spots within 100 yards of the cook area.  There are also tent areas and bath houses available.  Last we heard there were people coming from New York, California, NC, Kansas, Missouri, and Mississippi.  So, we're gonna put on a BIG Texas welcome.  This is gonna be a great event!

If you noticed above this National DOG is scheduled the weekend of our Chapter DOG.  So, we would like to move our DOG to the following weekend, September 18.

Here is the schedule for the rest of 2004.

September 10-12 - National DOG, Madisonville
*September 18 - Hill Country DOG at Flat Rock Lake October 1-3 - Parks & Wildlife Expo, Austin October 9 - Hill Country DOG, Ingram City Park November 13 - Hill Country DOG, Louise Hays Park

The LSDOS Board BIG DOG meeting will be held January 14-26, 2005, Lake Sommerville.

*Flat Rock Lake Park is located across Highway 27 from the Veterans Hospital on the banks of the Guadalupe River.  Flat ground and plenty of shade.  Bring tables and chairs.

We hope this finds you in great health and enjoying this great weather.  See y'all soon!

Keep the fires burning! Rich & Rose

September 20, 2004

Hi, ya'll!
The Hill Country Dutch oven cookers gathered together Saturday, September 18, for our DOG.  It was held at Flat Rock Park in a grove of large shade trees on the banks of the Guadalupe River.  The early arrivals were treated to a beautiful sun rise and early morning songs from the birds.  The start of a wonderful day.  Seven members and four guests enjoyed a quiet morning with fellowship and horse shoe pitching.  By late morning, everyone's attention was focued on cranking up the charcoal and getting down to business.  By 12:30 p.m., the pots were on the table, grace was said and everyone dug in.  Dixon and Ann White fixed pork roast and a new dish with grits.  That was really good.  Our traveling member Earl Timberlake had joined us and fixed chili pie.  There were sweet & sour red cabbage, grilled bratwurst, cole slaw, broccoli salad and other dishes that just put a happy smile on everyone's face.
Two of  our guests Roy & Mary Neal showed great interest in joining our group.  Roy has a conflicting schedule with his black powder shooting group but I believe we have Mary hooked.  We told her we would let her have a doggy bag for Roy but Roy said if that was to be he would probably never see it anyways.
After dinner, we had a meeting to update everyone on the Dutch oven happenings.  The 1st National DOG was discussed where Sam & Erin Miller, Jerry & Irene Martin, and Gale & Mary Merriwether hosted this event and worked their tails off so everyone could have a good time.  The new LSDOS web site was also discussed as well as the newsletter and the ballots which must be mailed and postmarked by October 15 not November 15.  Those wishing to renew their LSDOS membership in January, the dues have been raised to $20 per year.
Our member Georgia Lewis will be the Chapter Advisor for the new Chapter starting up in Hays County.  But she has already informed her group that they cannot meet on the second Saturday because she'll still be cooking with us.  Congratulations and good luck, Georgia!
The position of the Hill Country Chapter Advisor was discussed.  One person's name was brought forward who would be interested in doing this.  A vote was taken by members present and unanimously rejected.  After a lenthy discussion, Rose and I agreed to continue to be the contacts for our group.
We have a proposed schedule for next year and a few changes made.  First, our gatherings will be an all-day event.  Starting with a breakfast/brunch, a 1:00 p.m. dinner time, and cobblers/pies, etc., served later in the day.  You can cook for any or all of the meals if you wish.  We will also have horse shoes and various games going.  We are also opening our gatherings to any form of cooking such as Dutch ovens, gas grills, camp fires, BBQ pits, etc.
At this time our propose scheduled is:
    March - 1 day event
    April - 3 days Roundup
    May - 1 day event
    September - 1 day event
    October - 3 day Roundup
    November - 1 day event
Our 3-day Roundup will be held somehwere in this area so our members can join in the fun, food, and fellowship.  Here again, you can come cook for any meal or stay the day or however you wish to do it.  There will be a main meal Friday evening, a breakfast/brunch Saturday morning, and the main meal usually around 2:00 p.m.  Around 7:00 p.m., there will be a happy hour and snacks.  Sunday morning a late brunch.
We invite you all to head up one of these DOGs in the event that Rose and I can't.  We ask this because there have been several occasions when some family or friend activities came up that we couldn't attend.  So, we hope that once in a while you can help us.
We apologize that this is so long but we want to keep everyone informed on the happenings of this group and make this into a fun time and not a bunch of work.  Thank you for the fun, food, and fellowship!
Until next time, keep the fires burning!
R&R
P.S.  In future messages of our upcoming gatherings, please respond whether you plan to join us.  This will surely help us know how much gear we need to load (tables, extra charcoal, etc.), and it would make it little easier on us.  Thank you again.

Hill Country Chapter Dutch Oven Gathering, Saturday, March 13, 2004

Hi, yall!
It's finally time again to crank up the fires and dig out our favorite Black Pots.  I did a big goof and did not get our reservation for Ingram City Park made on time.  They were already booked for this time period.  So, this month we will start out at Louise Hayes Park at the pavilion.  For all the new people, this is located in the middle of downtown Kerrville on the Guadalupe River, below highway 16 South Bridge.
It will be great to see everyone again and I'm sure there will be lots of new recipes.  I tried several new ones but one I will have to try on yall is baked pears in a butter brandy sauce.  These are goooood!  Plus, if my sweet Rose ever decides to come back from Guam, she's gonna bring some Guamanian recipes back with her.
Talking about recipes, please bring copies of the recipes.  And maybe we can talk Rose into doing another cookbook.  I have also made up a 'recipe rack' where all the recipes can be displayed at one time.  This is just to make it easier.  But it will hold only 30 recipes.  So, go easy on me.
After our lunch, we will have a meeting to update everyone on the happenings within LSDOS.  We have a lot of great things happening and a lot of exciting things coming up.  This may get kinda length.  Those who want to stay for all the info, pull up a chair, grab a cup of coffee or have a cold beer and we'll have a good visit.
Again, looking forward to seeing yall, March 13, Louise Hayes Park,  Kerrville.

Keep the fires burning,
Rich & Rose

Hill Country Chapter
Hi, ya'll!
Rose and I just returned from the 2004 LSDOS Board meeting (January 24) at McKinney Falls State Park in Austin.
These are getting better all the time.  The format has changed and we had a BIG DOG for everyone before the meeting.  Friday evening, we had a Mexican Fiesta DOG and Sunday morning, there was the breakfast DOG.  I'm sure you can imagine the amount of food that was put out.  We invited the entire Park staff to eat with us each time.  Some of these folks can really eat.  But we had plenty and there was enough for many.
We had a good positive meeting and I believe the LSDOS will be growing in the future.  There are some committees that have been established to look into expanding the Society and lots of new ideas coming up.  We have new LSDOS lapel pins that each member will receive with their LSDOS renewal or we have a few that can be purchased for $1.50 for members or $3.00 for non-members.  We also brought back some cookbooks with us.  This is the one Lodge is printing and selling for us.  These are $10.00 each for members, $15.00 for non-members.  We only have five copies at this time but we can get more for anyone who wants them.  There is also LSDOS aprons available but  we did not bring any back with us.  Anyone who would like one, let us know and we will get them.  Price is $10.00 for members, $15.00 for non-members.
Above is our Chapter schedule.  Be sure to mark your calendar so you can attend our events.
Rose will be leaving in February for a two-week trip to Guam for her dad's 80th birthday.  When she gets back, we'll be excited to get our March DOG started and see you all again.
Until then, keep the fires burning!
