Fall 2007
I hope everyone has enjoyed the summer weather. Fall is here and it is time to get together and cook again.
I have finally recovered from the trip to the Fourth National DOG and a serious overdose of GUMBO! This was a fun event at beautiful Lake Darbonne in Northern Louisiana.
I remind everyone that the Lost Pines Chapter will be cooking at Fisherman’s Park in Bastrop. They will be there on the first Sunday afternoon of each month. They try to begin about one and have pots ready between three and four in the afternoon.
This month, we will be cooking on Saturday, 20 October, in Lexington. We will be cooking with the Traveling Dutch Oven Cookers, who will be there on October 19th, 20th, and 21st.
The location is Sonny’s RV Park. This is a full service park on Highway 77 in downtown Lexington. They have huge oak trees and nice campsites. They also have a couple of cabins available if anyone wants to make this a weekend event.
Our November get-together will be in Rockport, at the Bahia Vista RV Park, on FM 1781. You can find more about them at www.bahiavistarv.com. Some of us will gather and spend several days at the park, and we usually have a seafood dinner early Saturday evening. Most of us are tired of leftover turkey by Saturday and are ready for a change.

The Independence Chapter was started in 2002 by Sam Miller and other interested cooks. Our chapter covers the area of Central Texas South and Southeast of Austin, and Southeast of San Antonio.
The Independence Chapter has joined with local organizations to promote Dutch Oven cooking. We hold our April and November DOGs at the Pioneer Village, in Gonzales, where we prepare dishes for the public, participate in a Dutch Oven Cookoff, and demonstrate the art and science of Dutch Oven Cooking. We have also joined with the Friends of Palmetto (State Park), and have cooked and demonstrated Dutch Oven cooking for students from Gonzales Junior High School and Luling Junior High School. The Friends of Palmetto sponsor outdoor activities field days for the students.
Our Chapter DOGs are held on the fourth Saturday of the month, September through November, and January through May. We do not meet regularly during the summers, and usually do not meet in December.
We also join with other chapters to participate in larger gatherings called BIG DOGs. These are usually weekend gatherings located in different areas of Texas. These multi-day events allow us time to visit, to share recipes and information, and to cook dishes that require more time and care. We have traveled to Kerrville, Austin, Fentress, and Crockett for these gatherings. Members have also traveled to Louisiana to participate in gatherings, and plan to travel to Mississippi this summer.
